David Oliete – Human Towers in Catalonia

David Oliete - A human tower

David Oliete Casanova is a Catalan photographer, traveler and filmmaker who managed to capture one of the most inspiring traditions of Catalonia, Spain. The custom of building castells dates back to the late 18th century. Human towers usually consist of up to 500 people, often up to 10 men high. Constituting a significant part of Catalan culture and a true celebration of human collaboration, courage and togetherness, castell-building was added to UNESCO’s list of “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” in 2010. David Oliete has also produced a short video documentary from the 24th Concurs de Castells which gives a better insight into the event and its explosive atmosphere.
